My work is grounded in the real world and often shifts between the representational and the abstract. I need to keep that connection to the physical world. A daily newspaper is a prop I often rely on. Depending on my whereabouts I scour The New York Times or Svenska Dagbladet for images I like. They give me a connection to the greater world without necessarily turning the work itself into news, politics or fashion. Perhaps growing up with a journalist father made its mark. In my most recent work the abstract has the upper hand. The image of the newspaper is gone but the all over surface seems like a place where a message can be read. Some paintings have a subtle handwriting while others are bold and graphic. The world has a way of seeping in at all times.
